The world tree is unlocked right after the first dungeon 5 level quest as part of the tutorial.
During your first few Mazes you'll obtain items to allow you to upgrade your Gumballs to reach higher star levels. The world tree is also the main "list" to view and select your main active gumball from any of the four Factions. When entering a maze your main gumball may be soul linked with up to two other gumballs to gain their skills.
At the base of the world tree you may also find special items and Gumball Babies.

World tree fruits may be found in the maze or during Sky exploration.
The more fruits you collect, the more rewards you will be able to collect.
